SINGAPORE: Russian cybersecurity expert Eugene Kaspersky has been roped in as a member of the international advisory panel for Singapore's National Cybersecurity Research & Development (R&D) Programme.
The programme is a collaboration between seven Singapore government agencies: The National Research Foundation (NRF), Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), National Security Coordination Centre, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, Cyber Security Agency and the Economic Development Board.
Its stated aim is to develop cybersecurity research and development capabilities to meet national strategic security needs.
In a news release on Monday (Apr 4), Mr Kaspersky's cybersecurity software company Kaspersky Lab said his appointment took effect last Friday. The chairman and chief executive officer of the company said it was a "great honour" to become a member of the panel.
"Singapore is a small but very important, advanced country. It is often a step ahead of the rest of the world in many regards, and its strategic approach to cybersecurity is something other nations should follow," he said.
Earlier this year, the Government announced that a national security R&D laboratory would be ready by the end of 2016. It also inked a Memorandum of Understanding with Tel Aviv University to collaborate on cybersecurity research.
"Singapore is fast becoming a truly digital nation, and achieving a high level of cybersecurity through developing strong capabilities is vital in guaranteeing its sustainable development,” said Mr Kaspersky.
He added that the mix of academics, government officials and private sector individuals in the international advisory panel would provide valuable insight into the future of cybersecurity.
Other members of the panel include Professor Howard Schmidt, the former Cyber Advisor to US Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama; Israeli military scientist Professor Yitzhak Ben-Israel; former UK Government Chief Scientific Advisor Professor Sir John Beddington; MINDEF Chief Defence Scientist Professor Quek Tong Boon; NRF Advisor Professor Lui Pao Chuen; and MHA Senior Fellow Khoo Boon Hui.
