10 Technology Buzzwords You Won’t Be Able To Avoid In 2016

Technology is developing rapidly and every year there are new buzzwords that best explain current happenings and trends in the tech world. We all know what 2015 brought us, so now let’s look into the future. The reason why these particular trends caught our attention is that they’re more facts than predictions – the technology is already there and in 2016 will only become more popular. People love to use buzzwords in the tech industry, so check out our list of the top ten technology buzzwords that you won’t be able to avoid in 2016.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Scientists have been working on AI for years and in 2016 we will see its new applications. The term refers to autonomous intelligent behavior of software or machines that have a human-like ability to make autonomous decisions and to improve over time by learning from experience. Currently popular approaches include statistical methods, computational intelligence and traditional symbolic AI. There are a large number of tools used in AI, including versions of search and mathematical optimization, logic, methods based on probability and economics, and many others.

In 2016 we will experience more AI especially in medicine: heart monitors, health monitors and EEG signal processing algorithms are already on the research frontline. Another major step towards more advanced AI was made by Google when at the beginning of 2015 they introduced their self-driving cars. It’s possible thanks to meticulous maps (including even heights of curbs) installed in cars’ computers – they compare the pre-installed data with what they see with their sensors to make intelligent decisions. As building such maps for a bigger area, would be a mission impossible, scientists are now working to develop a car that would be intelligent enough to scan the road in front of it and learn from its own experience.

Other direction in which AI is heading, is the introduction of a truly smart smartphone which would be able to make stuff for us. For example you could tell your phone about the trip you plan and it would book the most convenient flight, hotel and rental car for you. Who knows, maybe AI even have the potential to make or at least help us with our strategic business decisions in the near future?

Mobilegeddon and Generation Z

On 21st April 2015 Google released a new algorithm that favors mobile-friendly pages in its mobile search results ranking. SEO crowd coined its own buzzword for the mobile friendly update: #Mobilegeddon! As a result of this update, there was a 4.7% increase in mobile friendly sites in March and April, because so many webmasters were finally incented to make their sites mobile friendly in order not to retain the traffic. But Google hasn’t said its last word yet. According to their data, there are more smartphone than desktop searches in U.S. and accordingly, search results should be updated to provide mobile searchers with the best UX.

What does Mobilegeddon have to do with Generation Z? Those youngest consumers, born after 1995, will soon dominate the market. Digital environment is their natural habitat and they seem to be born with smartphones in their hands. They will fuel the demand for everything mobile and also the advertisers will have to come up with new methods to target them via mobile devices, including wearables.

Smart Factory / Industry 4.0

The first industrial revolution introduced the mechanization of production using water and steam power. Hundred years later electricity, petroleum, new materials and substances, including alloys and chemicals, and communication technologies gave rise to the second industrial revolution. The third one was digital, with electronics and IT further automating production. For last few years scientists have been talking about the fourth revolution which is happening now as an effect of the advent of collective technologies and concepts of value chain organization. In short, cyber-physical systems (i.e. workpiece carriers, assembly stations and products), humans and smart factories will be able to connect and communicate with each other via the Internet of Things and the Internet of Services.

The factory of the future – the smart factory – will be a merger of IT and manufacturing. Machines will be interconnected and intelligent, and thanks to software applications will make use data to make smart, timely and data-driven decisions.

Actionable Analytic

Actionable Analytics will be one of the most used technology buzzwords as the volume, velocity and variety of big data will push business analytics to become more actionable. In 2016 software will crunch and correlate both structured and unstructured data and move closer to the point of action in real time. As opposed to older systems that primarily aggregated and computed structured data, actionable analytics tools will be able to reason, learn and deliver prescriptive advice. New self-service business intelligence tools will provide users with more transparent embedded analytics solutions and friendly user interfaces that would enable autonomous and informed decision-making. Business people will be able to pull valuable data insights whenever and wherever they want as cloud-based warehousing enables easy access on the fly. In theory missed business decisions should belong to the future but some decision-makers will still ignore data and follow their guts – human will remain the weakest part of the system.

Internet of Things / Device Mash / Ambient UX

Without doubt Internet of Things (IOT) is one of the most influential technology buzzwords of recent years and will continue to grow in popularity as its applications will become more and more tangible. With Internet of Things, the physical world will become one big information system. Everyday physical objects will be connected to Internet and to each other creating the ambient intelligence. The new task of designers will be facilitating of an ambient user experience that smoothly flows across and exploits different devices.

The device mesh refers to an expanding set of endpoints people use to access applications and information. The device mesh includes mobile devices, wearables, consumer and home electronic devices, automotive devices and environmental devices — all sensors in the Internet of Things that interact and cooperate with each other and that will constitute our Internet-connected reality.

Deep Learning / Advanced Machine Learning

Deep learning is the new big trend in machine learning and a technology buzzword that we will see trending in 2016. It promises more powerful and fast machine learning, moving us one step closer to AI. An exemplary application of this trend would be Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) – the predictive analytics method of analyzing data and a prominent Business Intelligence Trend of 2016. Neural networks create a system of interconnected layers with each subsequent layer acting as a filter for more and more complex features that combine those of the previous layer. This feature hierarchy and the filters which model significance in the data, make it possible for the layers to learn from experience. Thus deep nets can crunch unstructured data that was previously not available for unsupervised analysis.

ReactJS / React Native

ReactJS is a rising buzzword especially among front-end developers. It is a JavaScript library and a new concept to build user interfaces for large applications that has changed the approach to building front end apps, originally developed for Facebook and Instagram. Its main idea is building reusable components that make code reuse and testing more affordable. Moreover, it improves the teamwork by enforcing workflow patterns, increasing the speed and simplifying the coding process. The new concept of componentized user interfaces is the future of web development.

Furthermore with react native they are trying to go native for app developers for IOS and Android Platforms. Even if React and React Native are quite different in term of use they use the same logic and therefore it shouldn’t be hard to learn React Native if you understood React already. This would also mean you don’t have to use two different applications for your web apps and IOS/Android Apps.

Net Neutrality / Encryption

Net Neutrality means that Internet service providers should provide us with open networks — and should not block or discriminate against any applications or content that is sent via these networks. Net Neutrality is the Internet’s guiding principle, without which cable and phone companies could ‘divide’ the Internet into fast and slow lanes. One Internet service provider could slow down its competitors’ content or block political opinions it disagreed with. ISPs could apply preferential treatment to some companies, whereas charge extra fees to other.

In October members of European Parliament agreed to bring back EU-wide net neutrality rules — which will come into force from April 30, 2016. Additionally, they decided to end mobile roaming charges in the region by mid-2017 and decrease the fees significantly by next summer 2016. It’s a big step towards bringing down barriers in the Digital Single Market and a major advancement in technology. The new rules will protect the right of every European citizen to access the content of their choice, without interference or discrimination. They will avoid diversification within the single market, facilitating business transactions across borders.

Information of Everything

The Internet of Things will bring us even more devices that produce, use and transmit information. They will produce information that goes beyond textual, audio or video, and include sensory and contextual data. Information of everything addresses this influx with strategies and technologies to link data from all these different data sources. The examples of data analytics methods that will address Information of Everything are two top BI trends of 2016: innovative data virtualization and graph databases. They are capable of processing data from multiple databases, whether structured or unstructured, on premise or in the cloud, into coherent data services that support business transactions, analytics, and other workload patterns. So far information that was spread across different sources, isolated or incomplete, remained unavailable for analysis. In 2016 new technological advancements will bring meaning to information that until now have been beyond our reach.

Quantum Computing

Last but not least Quantum Computing will be a rising technology buzzword in 2016. In general quantum computers can solve much more complex problems than classical electronic computers by using quantum bits (qubits) instead of binary digits (bits). This means that the data doesn’t have to be limited to 2 defined states any more: 0 or 1. For this reason quantum computing is much more flexible by allowing computations to be performed in parallel.

However the real challenge is how do quantum machines really carry out these quantum computations. Scientists have been researching in this field for decades, it maybe still take some years quantum computing becomes a reality.
